2017 Fiction Manuscript Contest

Please read carefully! These guidelines have changed in recent years. The contest is for SCBWI Member attendees of the Midsouth Conference only. Winners in the Picture Book, Middle Grade, and Young Adult categories will be announced at the conference and will receive an invitation to submit their work to this year’s judge, Emilia Rhodes at HarperTeen. This year attendees will register and pay for the contest when registering for the conference. These slots fill up quickly so register early if you’d like to be a part of the contest. Fee of $15, limited to the first 20 entrants in each category. Judge: Emilia Rhodes at HarperTeen
-          The judge will choose one winning manuscript and, at the judge's discretion, honorable mentions from each category, based on “most publishable!”
 
Categories:
-          Picture Book
-          Middle Grade
-          Young Adult
 
Participants:
-          Must be a fully paid 2017 Midsouth Fall Conference attendee. The contest is limited to current SCBWI members from any region.
 
Fee:
-          $15 (Due upon registration for the conference.* First 20 entrants in each category only.)
 
Deadline:
-          All entries must be emailed to the contest coordinator no later than July 15, 11:59 p.m. Eastern/10:59 p.m. Central
 
To enter:
-          Register and pay for the manuscript contest when you register for the Midsouth Fall Conference.
-          Email entries only! Entries will be received any time beginning after registration opens but no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern/10:59 p.m. Central on July 15.. Entries received after the deadline will not be submitted to the contest judge, and the contest fee will not be refunded.
-          For information on submitting to a specific category, see below. For more submission, see the FAQ and formatting links above. All entrants will receive an email informing them that their entry was received.
 
Limitations:
-          Limited to the first 20 registrants in each category; all submissions must be FICTION.
-          Only one submission to only one category for each contestant.
-          ALL entries must be original, unpublished, and uncontracted manuscripts. (“Unpublished” includes both traditional and self-published.)
-          Previous 1st place winners of this contest may not re-enter a manuscript in the same category the following year, but may enter a manuscript in another category. They may reenter with a different manuscript in their previously-won category after the one-year hiatus.
-          All previous winning manuscripts (including Honorable Mentions) of this contest may not be entered again into this contest. A new manuscript must be entered.
 
Prizes:
-          Invitation to submit from our judge.
-          Crowd adulation!
-          First place winners will also receive a written critique of their entry from the judge.
-          Winners will be announced on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the Midsouth Fall Conference.
 
To enter the picture book category, email one full picture book manuscript, standard format **, limit 1000 words (text only, no dummies) to  MidsouthManuContest@gmail.com. Ms. should be attached to the email as a Word document. (File extension must be “.doc” OR “.docx”.) All ms. pages should have a header at the top of the manuscript with title, category, and page numbers, but no other identifying marks. Include word count along with text on the first page of the ms. Within the body of the email please include title, category, word count, the author’s name, address, phone numbers, and email address. Only attachments will be forwarded to the judge. Information within the body of the original email will remain with the ms. coordinator unless requested by the judge. The subject line of the email should read: Picture Book Entry, Fiction Manuscript Contest 2017.
 
To enter the middle grade category, email the first 10 pages of a middle grade novel, standard format ** and a one-page synopsis (single or double-spaced) to MidsouthManuContest@gmail.com.  Ms. and synopsis should be in one document with ms first followed by the synopsis.  Ms. should be attached to the email as a Word document. (File extension must be “.doc” OR “.docx”.) All ms. pages should have a header at the top of the manuscript with title, category, and page numbers, but no other identifying marks. In the body of the email please include title, category, the author’s name, address, phone numbers, and email address. Only attachments will be forwarded to the judge. The information within the body of the original email will remain with the ms. coordinator unless requested by the judge. The subject line of the email should read: Middle Grade Entry, Fiction Manuscript Contest 2017.

CO-AUTHORED manuscripts – Both authors must submit a statement by email to the contest coordinator that the manuscript has been submitted with the knowledge and permission of each author. Email should be sent to Gail Nall, Fiction Ms Contest Coordinator at gailnallwrites@gmail.com. Only one email entry should be sent during the manuscript submission period.
 
 
 
*The contest fee must be paid upon your registration for the conference. Manuscripts received that have not had the contest fee prepaid will not be entered into the contest.
 
**For this contest, standard format is 12 pt. standard font such as Times New Roman, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins. Text on the first page may begin where the author deems appropriate. The synopsis may be single or double spaced, but limited to one page. No other criteria will be used to determine standard format. Please remember to save and attach as a Word document (.doc or .docx). Note: Entries incorrectly formatted, with incomplete information, or attachments with incorrect file extensions will be given a chance to resubmit, but corrected entries must be received before the July 15th deadline. To ensure ample time to correct any formatting mistakes, please email your entry early!
