2019 Midsouth Fiction Contest Guidelines

 

Please read carefully! These guidelines have changed in recent years.

 

The contest judges will choose one winning manuscript and, at the judge’s discretion, honorable mentions from each category, based on “most publishable!”

• Picture Book

• Middle Grade

• Young Adult

 

Fee

$25 fee is due upon registration for the conference.*

 

Rules and Guidelines

• The contest is only open to SCBWI members who attend the full Midsouth conference (not open to Retreat Track attendees).

• All submissions must be FICTION.

• Limited to the first 20 registrants in each category.

• Only one submission to only one category for each contestant.

• ALL entries must be original, unpublished, and uncontracted manuscripts. (“Unpublished” includes both traditional and self-published.)

• Previous first place winners of this contest may not re-enter a manuscript in the same category the following year but may enter a manuscript in another category. They may reenter with a different manuscript in their previously-won category after the one-year hiatus.

• All previous winning manuscripts (including honorable mentions) of this contest may not be entered again into this contest. A new manuscript must be entered.

 

Deadline

All entries must be emailed to the contest coordinator no later than July 8th at 11:59 p.m. EDT/10:59 p.m. CDT.

 

Prizes

• Invitation to submit to the contest judge.

• Crowd adulation!

• First place winners will also receive a written critique of their entry from the judge.

• Winners will be announced on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the Midsouth Silver and Steam Gala Dinner.

 

How to Enter:

Sign up and pay for the fiction contest when you register for the Midsouth Fall Conference. These slots fill up quickly, so register early! Once these spots fill, this option will disappear from registration.

 • Email your entry any time after registration opens but no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern/10:59 p.m. Central on July 8. (Entries are only accepted via email!) Entries received after the deadline will not be submitted to the contest judge, and the contest fee will not be refunded.

• For information on submitting to a specific category, read the information below and see the FAQ and formatting links below.

• Check your email. All entrants will receive an email informing them their entry was received.

To enter the picture book category, email one full picture book manuscript, standard format**, limit 1000 words (text only, no dummies) to MidsouthManuContest@gmail.com. Manuscripts should be attached to the email as a Word document. (File extension must be “.doc” OR “.docx”.) All manuscript pages should have a header at the top of the manuscript with title, category, and page numbers, but no other identifying marks. Include word count along with text on the first page of the manuscript. Within the body of the email, please include title, category, word count, the author’s name, address, phone numbers, and email address. Only attachments will be forwarded to the judge. Information within the body of the original email will remain with the contest coordinator unless requested by the judge. The subject line of the email should read: Picture Book Entry, Fiction Contest 2019.

 

To enter the middle grade category, email the first 10 pages of a middle grade novel, standard format** and a one-page synopsis (single or double-spaced) to MidsouthManuContest@gmail.com. Manuscript and synopsis should be in one document with manuscript first followed by the synopsis. Manuscript should be attached to the email as a Word document. (File extension must be “.doc” OR “.docx” with the exception of a graphic novel, which may be submitted as a PDF.) All manuscript pages should have a header at the top of the manuscript with title, category, and page numbers, but no other identifying marks. In the body of the email, please include title, category, the author’s name, address, phone numbers, and email address. Only attachments will be forwarded to the judge. The information within the body of the original email will remain with the contest coordinator unless requested by the judge. The subject line of the email should read: Middle Grade Entry, Fiction Contest 2019.

 

To enter the young adult category, email the first 10 pages of a young adult novel, standard format** and a one-page synopsis (single or double-spaced) to MidsouthManuContest@gmail.com. Manuscript and synopsis should be in one document with manuscript first followed by the synopsis. Manuscript should be attached to the email as a Word document. (File extension must be “.doc” OR “.docx” with the exception of a graphic novel, which may be submitted as a PDF.) To submit poetry—this includes rhyming picture books, novels in verse, and stand-alone poetry collections. Poetry submissions should conform to the picture book and novel guidelines above; however, they may be single spaced with a double space between stanzas, per industry standards. Stand-alone collections (i.e. a group of poems intended to be published as one book) must have a page break at the end of each poem. There is a limit of 2500 words.

 

To submit a co-authored manuscript—Both authors must submit a statement by email to the contest coordinator that the manuscript has been submitted with the knowledge and permission of each author. Email should be sent to Gail Nall, fiction contest coordinator, at gailnallwrites@gmail.com. Only one email entry should be sent during the manuscript submission period.

 

Note: Entries incorrectly formatted with incomplete information or attachments with incorrect file extensions will be given a chance to resubmit, but corrected entries must be received before the July 8th deadline. To ensure ample time to correct any formatting mistakes, please email your entry early!

* The contest fee must be paid when you register for the conference. Manuscripts received that have not had the contest fee prepaid will not be entered into the contest.

 

** For this contest, standard format is 12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Text on the first page may begin where the author deems appropriate. The synopsis may be single or double spaced, but limited to one page. No other criteria will be used to determine standard format.
