Illustrator Opportunities

We are excited to offer several opportunities to illustrators who attend the conference.

Individual Written Paid Portfolio Critiques ($55)

Have your art critiqued by an art director for an additional fee of $55. To be scheduled for an individual paid portfolio critique, please check the appropriate box when you register online. Space is limited, so paid portfolio critiques will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Once space is filled, the option to register for a critique will disappear from the registration site. Conference fees, proof of vaccination and registration must be received by March 5th to participate. One paid portfolio critique per attendee, limited to current SCBWI members from any region. No refunds. See Submission FAQs for how to submit your portfolio ahead of time. Deadline to submit portfolios is January 5th

Written-only critiques (returned in your folder):

$55 to have a critiquer assigned to you

Paid Portfolio Critique Formatting

(Illustrators note: this is different from Showcase formatting)

Due to the fact that all critiques are written-only in 2022, portfolios must be submitted in advance by January 5th in the following format:

• Collect 10-15 pieces into a single PDF file with a file name of FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_PORTFOLIO_REVIEW_2022

• Each page of the PDF should be numbered for ease of reference by the critiquer.

• Include a cover page (in addition to the 10-15 pages of art) with the following information:

First Name Last Name

Website

Email

Phone number

Submit your correctly formatted portfolio to SCBWIMidsouthCritiques@gmail.com  by January 5th, 2022

Individual Paid Picture Book Dummy Written Critiques ($55-$79)

Illustrators who also write may submit a picture book dummy for an individual manuscript critique. Dummy must be accompanied by a properly formatted manuscript as a PDF no larger than 5MB. The prices are as follows:

Written-only critiques (returned in your folder):

  • $79 to choose your own critiquer.
  • $50 to have a critiquer assigned to you.

For details about manuscript formatting, see the Manuscript Critiques and Submissions page.

Please contact Mary Uhles, Midsouth illustrator coordinator, at midsouth-ic@scbwi.org with questions and the words DUMMY CRITIQUE (all caps) in the subject line. Deadline to submit portfolios is January 5th

Portfolio Showcase ($25)

5:00–6:30 p.m. Saturday

SCBWI Midsouth will host a juried portfolio showcase on Saturday. To participate, select this option when registering for the conference. Then bring your portfolio to the registration table between 1:00-1:45pm on Saturday, March 26th. Portfolios will have a private viewing with faculty before the Cocktail and Autograph Party. Faculty members will be encouraged to mark their favorite pieces from all portfolios submitted, and an overall winner will be selected and announced at the Gala Dinner. No digital portfolios. One promotional piece may be displayed with your portfolio. Please collect your portfolio after the Cocktail and Autograph Party at 6:30 p.m. SCBWI cannot be held responsible for damaged or torn materials and/or portfolios not picked up at that time. See the portfolio size and formatting guidelines in the Illustrators’ Lounge. Grand Prize winner will be promoted on midsouth.scbwi.org and in our social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter, with prominent tweeting under the hashtag #kidlitart.
