Developing Your Best Dummy artGet your dummies in shape for conference season with our all new event: Developing Your Best Dummy.  As you can see in the Brochurethis workshop replicates the editorial process to help you develop your best picture book dummy.

 Registration is open!  Choose In-Person Full or Online-Only track.  Check out both tracks below!  Scroll to the bottom to continue registering.

 


In-Person Full:

Full attendees will work with Orli Zuravicky, editor from Scholastic, through two critiques of the same picture book manuscript and dummy of their choosing. FULL Attendees will have access to a private peer to peer critique site in order to seek extra feedback. The editorial critique process will culminate in a weekend retreat with Giuseppe Castellano, art director at Penguin Putnam. At the retreat Mr. Castellano will provide feedback on structure and pacing of dummies as well as one final spread. In addition Full Attendees will have the option to schedule a personal 15 minute portfolio critique.

FULL Retreat Participant Schedule:

  • *Private peer to peer sharing blog opens January 5th. Both OLOs and Fulls may submit manuscripts for peer to peer critique at any time on the blog in addition to submitting for editorial critique.
  • *Jan. 19 FULLS send manuscripts to Retreat Coordinators.
  • *Feb 20 Retreat Coordinators send Orli Zuravicky's 1st editorial feedback back to FULLS
  • *March 27 FULLS send revisions to Retreat Coordinators
  • *April 20 Retreat Coordinators sends Orli Zuravicky's 2nd editorial feedback to FULLS
  • *April 30 FULLS send two sketched spreads and dummies (incorporating possible revisions from Orli Zuravicky) to Retreat Coordinators
  • *May 12 Retreat Coordinators send Giuseppe Castellano's comments to FULLS. FULLS choose one spread and proceed to final.
  • *June 5-7 FULLS retreat in west Tennessee.  See the complete weekend schedule at the bottom of this page.


Online-Only:

Online-Only (OLO) attendees will work with Alyson Heller, editor at Simon and Schuster, through two revisions of the same picture book manuscript of their choosing. OLO Attendees will have access to the same private peer to peer critique site but will not be able to submit work for critique to Mr. Castellano or be able to attend to the retreat.

  • *April 17 OLOs send revisions to Retreat Coordinators
  • *May 18 Retreat Coordinators send Allyson Heller's 2nd editorial feedback on revisions to OLOs
  • *OLOs may participate in peer to peer blog up until June 4th

Weekend Retreat Schedule for Full Participants of Creating Your Best Dummy Workshop*

Friday June 5:

5 – 7pm: Participants arrive and check in at the Inn boardroom
7pm – 7:50pm: Opening remarks, presentation on the inner workings of Penguin/Grosset and Dunlap/PSS art department with an emphasis on working with illustrators. Q&A.
7:50pm – 8:15pm: break
8:15pm – 9pm: Drawing Exercises & Games: "Creative Thinking".

Saturday June 6:

7:30am – 8:30am: Breakfast buffet at Inn Restaurant
8:30am – 12pm: Group Review dummies on a big screen in Boardroom
12:30pm – 1:30pm: Lunch at Inn Restaurant
12:30 pm – 6pm: Participants work individually. Illustrators will have the option to focus on a cover piece, revise their spread, start a new spread, etc. Optional 15 minute portfolio reviews will happen during this time as well.
5pm – 6pm: Mr. Castellano will walk around and check in on progress..
6pm – 7pm: Break, prepare for dinner
7pm – 8pm: Dinner at Inn Restaurant
9pm – whenever: Informal pow-wow, Q&A or something fun by the beach or pool depending on weather

Sunday June 7

8:00am – 10:30am: Participants gather in boardroom for continental breakfast and group review of previous day's work. This review is less formal with feedback but no onscreen review by Mr. Castellano.
10:30am – 11am – Closing remarks
